Brakes

It was not unexpected that the brakes would need to be completely redone. After sitting for so many years all of the brake lines and hoses were junk so they were replaced. I pulled all of the drums and backing plates off the axles and dismantled the brakes. The linings were not completely gone but needed replacing. The drums could not be turned because they were already to the maximum allowable but they were not grooved or scored so I cleaned and reused them as is. It almost looked like the truck had had a brake job not long before it was parked. All of the brake cylinders and the master cylinder needed replacing. I didn't think it was worthe trying to rebuild these parts considering new ones were relatively inexpensive. While the brakes were apart I replaced the front and rear wheel bearings and seals. The rear wheel bearings are pressed onto the axle shaft and held in place by a retainer ring. I took these to the shop that rebuilt the engine to have removed and replaced. This shop is also a automotive parts store so they were able to get the new parts as well. There are several local parts houses that have access to replacement mechanical parts and the advantage is that there are not shipping charges plus if the parts are wrong they are easily returned and exchanged. NAPA has been a good source of parts.
